Gariūnai Viaduct Reconstruction Reaches Halfway Point – Second Stage Begins

The reconstruction of the Gariūnai Viaduct has reached its halfway point: following the successful completion of reconstruction works on the southern, left-hand side of the viaduct, the second stage is now beginning, during which the remaining part of the viaduct will be reconstructed.

One of the first and most important works of the second stage will be the dismantling of the northern part of the viaduct, in the direction of Kaunas. These works will be carried out over two nights – on 18–19 September and 19–20 September, from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Located at the entrance to Vilnius, the Gariūnai Viaduct is situated on the country’s busiest motorway, the A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda, which carries heavy traffic volumes every day – on average, around 44,000 vehicles per day, including about 4,600 heavy goods vehicles. The reconstruction works are being carried out without stopping traffic, so traffic management is being adjusted in stages according to the works being performed.

Traffic reorganisation will begin on 17 September, with traffic in both directions redirected onto the reconstructed left-hand side of the viaduct. Two narrowed traffic lanes will remain open in each direction. The same traffic management arrangement will also apply on the A19 Vilnius Southern Bypass section beneath the viaduct.

The reconstruction of the Gariūnai Viaduct is planned to be completed in summer 2027. Once all works are finished, the old viaduct will be replaced by a new structure meeting modern safety and durability requirements.
