Important Milestone in the Construction of the Neris Pedestrian Bridge: Main Structure Installed

Works on the new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the Neris River in Vilnius are progressing rapidly and have reached an important milestone – the installation of the timber bridge deck structure has been completed.

With the timber deck structures now installed, the project is moving into its next stage. In the near future, the installation of the steel deck plate will begin, followed by finishing works: railings and lighting will be installed, infrastructure will be arranged, retaining walls will be concreted, riverbank slopes will be restored, paths will be built, paving stones will be laid, and benches will be installed. All these works will form the final aesthetic appearance of the bridge.

“The Neris pedestrian bridge is a unique engineering structure whose main load-bearing elements are made of timber, combining sustainability principles, aesthetics and modern technologies. We have been building bridges for more than thirty years, but this project is truly exceptional – very interesting from a construction perspective, yet also highly complex. I am pleased that we have successfully completed the most demanding and technically challenging works and are smoothly moving on to the next stage,” said Eduardas Grinaveckas, CEO of UAB Tilsta, commenting on the bridge construction.

The complex installation of the bridge structure over the river, which lasted throughout the summer, required exceptional precision, team focus and professionalism. During this period, around 180 timber elements of various dimensions were assembled and installed. Some of the elements were truly impressive in size – for example, the longest bridge beam measured as much as 39 metres, with a height of 1.4 metres and a width of 0.4 metres. The heaviest timber element installed weighed around 20 tonnes. All of these massive components had to be connected with millimetre precision above the river and on the concreted supports.

The bridge construction works are planned to be completed by the end of this year. The bridge connecting A. Goštauto and Upės streets will become an important part of sustainable mobility infrastructure, not only improving connectivity for Vilnius residents but also enhancing the renewed Neris riverside.
